Featherston Findings Volume 12

FORWARD

Volume 12 – September 1993. FEATHERSTON FINDINGS has now passed its third anniversary. Thanks to each of you, we are still going strong. It is my hope that this series has helped you in gaining knowledge of our various
Featherston(e) families. With various items of information in this volume, I have attempted to identify individuals as to their branch number as shown in previous volumes and/or their parents.
After 12 years of gathering and sorting Featherston(e) material, I have learned a great deal about our ancestors and their descendants. However. I’m still unable to identify some individuals. In this volume you will find notes asking for help with this problem. If anyone can help, please notify us.
The majority of our readers are descendants of Featherston(e)s who settled in the southern U.S. Most of the material that has been submitted involves these branches. I’m sure you are all aware that many Featherston(e)s also settled in the northern sections of our country.

Some volumes of FEATHERSTON FINDINGS contain items about our northern cousins and will continue to do so. However, in most cases I cannot make identification of these individuals. If anyone can help us with this, please let us know.
Thank you for your support.
Joyce Featherston Hawkins

DEEDS: In the lower left hand corner of most old deeds, you will find the signature of from two to four witnesses. The first one is always from the husband’s side, the next is always from the wife’s side. That is to protect her “dower” right under the law and gives a clue to the wife’s maiden name.

Death of Wm. E. Featherston (cont.)

Mr. Featherston was born in Kentucky, and came to this city in 1840.
Owing to his advanced age he was among the first to engage in the auction business in this city, in a day when that business was of great importance.
It began to decline soon after the beginning of the civil war, when Indianapolis increased largely in population.
The auction business was at its best from 1845 to 1858. For several years probably the best known business corner in the city was that occupied by the auction house of Thomas Gott and William Featherston at the northeast corner of Washington and Pennsylvania streets, then as now in the heart of the business life of Indianapolis. This was an old-fashioned whitewashed, two-story brick. A picture taken in 1858 shows this building and a view north in Pennsylvania street when the corner of Market and Pennsylvania had been cleared to make ready for the postoffice building, which is in its turn to be superceded by another building in a few months.
Boyhood Enterprise
Mr. Featherston came to this State when a boy eight years old and lived at Southport this county, until eighteen, when he came to this city. As a boy he sold game, butter and eggs on the market and also collected ginseng of
diggers about Southport, which he sold to druggists here, who were then heavy dealers in that root for which there was a great demand from China. Mr. Featherston was not only an auctioneer, but was the first trustee of Center township and was treasurer of the first building and loan association orgainized in Indianapolis. He was a member of the old volunteer fire department, which gave way to the present system nearly fifty years ago.
During the latter years of his business life he was engaged in the dry goods and auction business in West Washington street, near Missouri street. In 1845 he married Miss May Norwood of this city. She died in 1870 and
he married Mrs. Emily Billingsly, who survives him, in 1872. Mrs. Henry Knippenberg and Mrs. C.B. Whitson are adopted daughters. He was noted for his kindly disposition and his unswerving integrity.

Biography of Herschel Burroughs Fryberger

Fryberger, Herschel Burroughs, Lawyer – When Herschel Burroughs Fryberger first entered upon the practice of law at Duluth, Minnesota, during the closing decade of the last century, he took the first step in a professional
career which brought him distinction and success. A member of a pioneer Minnesota family, he was long a member of the Duluth bar and one of the best known figures in the city’s life. cont…
Page 16
Biography of Herschel Burroughs Fryberger (cont.)

Mr. Fryberger was born on a farm in Goodhue County, Minnesota, on March 15, 1865, a son of William and Margaret Mary (Burroughs) Fryberger. His father was born at Goshen, Ohio, in 1890; his mother was born in Shawneetown, Illinois, in 1832, and died in 1918 at Minneapolis, where she was living with a daughter. They were married in Kentucky, and one year afterward, in 1854, removed to Goodhue County, Minnesota, where they were pioneer settlers. Here they raised their family and lived for many years. Herschel Burroughs Fryberger received his preliminary education in Minnesota public schools and subsequently entered the University of Minnesota,
where he prepared for his professional career. He was graduated from this institution in 1892, taking the degree of Bachelor of Laws, and in the following year began practice in Duluth, where his activities centered for the
remainder of his life. Although meeting the usual difficulties of a young lawyer, he quickly established his reputation as an able, acute and energetic member of the bar. His forceful handling of the cases entrusted to him, his incisive logic, which enable him to find the flaw in opponents’ cases while presenting his own with great cogency, and his broad legal scholarship were all reflected in his success, leading to many demands upon his services. In the early years of his practice, he was in partnership with Lane McGregor. Later, he formed other professional associations, and for a number of years before his death was senior member of the well-known Duluth firm of Fryberger, Fulton and Boyle. He continued active in the law until the last, rounding out a brilliant professional career, whose luster grew with the years.
Mr. Fryberger, was a prominent member of the Eleventh Judicial District Bar Association over a long period and had a leading part in its counsels. He was also a member of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, and was affiliated fraternally with Ionic Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons. He was influential in the city’s general life, and was a devoted supporter of meritorious civic enterprises, seeking at all times the advancement of the city’s interests and the welfare of its people. In religious faith, Mr. Fryberger was a member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church.
He married, on August 16, 1899, Nellie Featherstone, who was born in Goodhue County, Minnesota, on August 14, 1868. daughter of William John and Helen (Leavitt) Featherstone. Her father was born in Ontario, Canada, in
1845, and died at Red Wing, Minnesota in 1932. Her mother was born in Warren. Ohio, in 1842, and died at Red Wing in 1932. Mr. and Mrs. Fryberger became the parents of six children, all born in Duluth: 1. Helen Margaret,
born November 27, 1900; married Warren Sadler Moore, of Duluth, and has four children: Russell, Irving, Helen, and Sidney. 2. Virginia Louise, born May 23. 1902; married Joseph Gerald Sellwood of Duluth, and they have two sons: Michael Gerald and Joseph Anthony. 3. William Beverly, born August 3, 1902; married Kathleen O’Brien, and has one son. David. 4. Herschel Burroughs, Jr., born April 24, 1906; married Patricia Salyards, of Duluth, and has one daughter, Patricia. 5. Robert Morris, born October 20, 1907; married La Verne Meadows, of Carrington. North Dakota and has twin sons; Robert Morris and Gerald Meadows. 6. Philip Kenyon, born December 14, 1911, died October 9, 1936. cont…

Biography of Herschel Burroughs Fryberger (cont.)

Mr. Fryberger died in Miami, Florida, on March 29, 1937, in his seventy-third year. The accomplishments of his career and his attainments commanded the profound respect both of professional associates at Duluth and
elsewhere, and of the general public of the city, which was so long his home.
He was known as a man of brilliant talents who employed them usefully, winning success through his own efforts, and honor by his rectitude of character and strict allegiance to high ideals.

BRANCHES

The BRANCHES section of FEATHERSTON FINDINGS presents an opportunity for all of those interested in our heritage to record our direct descent.

These BRANCHES are not confined to the spelling of Featherston, but may also include Featherstone, Featherstun, etc. If you have not yet sent in your BRANCH, please do so as soon as possible. I encourage you to take advantage of this FREE SERVICE.

These BRANCHES will be published in the order in which they are received or at my discretion. Every effort will be made to transcribe material exactly as it is submitted. However, if errors occur in this transcription process,
please let me know, so I can make corrections in a future volume. If, while typing your lineage for publication, there is a doubt as to the spelling of your surname, the spelling of Featherston will be used.
These BRANCHES may be added to or corrected in future volumes.
Therefore, it is not necessary to wait until you have completed your research before submitting your lineage for publication. Although we all may have best intentions of permanently recording our findings, too often the family
historian passes away or becomes too ill to continue research work and those years of research are lost forever.
By publishing your BRANCH and research material in FEATHERSTON FINDINGS you not only protect your family information, but help future researchers find their elusive family heritage.
You may submit your lineage in the form found in this section or you may submit the information on Family Group Sheets. It is not so important how you submit your lineage, but that you do submit it. Please cite your sources
whenever possible.
If you find you are fortunate enough to connect with an established branch already in print, please let me know. The branches will be merged in a future volume, the earlier branch number will be maintained, and later number be eliminated. Perhaps we may eventually find a common ancestor and become one large family!
