FEATHERSTON, Winfield Scott, soldier, b. in Rutherford county, Tenn., 8 Aug., 1821. He was educated at various academies, and in 1836, while at school in Georgia, served for three months as a volunteer against the Creek Indians. He then studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1840. He was afterward elected to congress as a Democrat, and served in 1847-151, but was defeated for a third term by the Union candidate. He was a presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1852, and was sent by 11is state to Kentucky in December, 1860, to confer with the authorities on the subject of secession. In May, 1861, he became colonel of the 17th Mississippi regiment. He served in Virginia in 1861-‘2, and on 4 March of the latter year was promoted to brigadier-general for gallantry at Ball’s Bluff. He was wounded on the fifth day of the battles around Richmond, and in January, 1863, was transferred to Vicksburg at his own request. He commanded an expedition sent to meet Porter’s gun-boats, ascending Deer Creek, joined Johnston in Georgia in May, 1864, and continued with that army till the surrender in 1865. commanding a division much of the time. After the war he returned to the practice of law, and was a member of the Mississippi legislature in 1876-‘8 and 1880-‘2. In 1881 he became judge of the 2d judicial circuit of the state.

FEATHERSTONHAUGH, George William, traveller, b. in 1780; d. in Havre, France, 28 Sept., 1866. In his early life he spent many years in North America, and in 1834-‘5 made for the U.S. war department a geological inspection of part of the western country. In his reports, which were printed by order of congress. he is called “United States geologist.” The government authorized these examinations to be made only in the territories of the United States; but Featherstonhaugh took notes upon all the country passed over in his journeys. for use when congress should authorize a geological map of the United States. Such a map is now projected (1887), fifty years after Featherstonhaugh’s surveys. On account of his thorough knowledge of the country, he was appointed by the British government a commissioner to settle the northern boundary of the United States, under the Ashburton treaty, and for the successful execution of this task was made British consul for the departments of Calvados and Seine, France. His writings on statistical and political subjects were clear and vigorous. and his geological memoirs merited the approval of his friends Buckland and Murchison.

GRANDMA CLIMBED THE FAMILY TREE

There’s been a change in Grandma, we’ve noticed of late
She’s always reading history, or jotting down some date.
She’s tracing back the family, we’ll all have pedigrees,
Grandma’s got a hobby, she’s Climbing Family Trees. …

Poor Grandpa does the cooking, and now, or so he states
He even has to wash the cups and dinner plates.
Well, Grandma can’t be bothered, she’s busy as a bee
Compiling genealogy for the Family Tree.

She has no time to baby-sit, the curtains are a fright
No buttons left on Grandpa’s shirts, the flower bed’s a sight
She’s given up her club work, the serials on TV
The only thing she does nowadays is climb that Family Tree.

The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far-
Last week she got the proof she needs to join the DAR.
A monumental project -to that we all agree,
A worthwhile avocation -to climb the Family Tree.

She wanders through the graveyard in search of date and name-
The rich, the poor, the in between, all sleeping there the same.
She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze
That blows above the Fathers of all our Family Trees.

GRANDMA CLIMBED THE FAMILY TREE (cont. )

Now some folks came from Scotland. some from Galway Bay-
Some were French as pastry. some German all the way.
Some went on West to stake their claims. some stayed there by the sea.
Grandma hopes to find them all as she climbs the Family Tree.

There were pioneers and patriots mixed with our kith and kin-
Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin
But none more staunch than Grandma -whose eyes light up with glee
Each time she finds a missing branch for the Family Tree.

Their skills were wide and varied from carpenter to cook
And one -alas -the records show, was hopelessly a crook.
Blacksmith, farmer, weaver. judge -some tutored for a fee.
Once lost in time, now all recorded on the Family Tree.

To some it’s just a hobby, to Grandma it’s much more-
She learns the joys and heartaches of those who went before.
They loved. they lost. they laughed. they wept -and now for you and me
They live again in spirit around the Family Tree.

At last she’s nearly finished, and we are each exposed –
Life will be the same again -this we all suppose.
Grandma will cook and sew, serve crullers with our tea,
We’ll have her back, just as before, that wretched Family Tree.

Sad to relate, the Preacher called and visited for a spell –
We talked about the Gospel and other things as well.
The heathen folk, the poor, and then–’twas fate–it had to be
Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma -and the Family Tree.

We tried to change the subject, we talked of everything-
But then in Grandma’s voice we heard that old familiar ring.
She told him all about the past, and soon ’twas plain to see
The preacher, too, was neatly snared by Grandma and the Family Tree.

He never knew his Grandad, his mother’s name was—Clark?
He and Grandma talked and talked.-outside it grew quite dark.
We’d hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease.
Grandma’s become an addict -she’s hooked -on Family Trees.

Our spirits filled with sorrow, our hearts sank with dismay-
Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma say,
“It surely is a lucky thing that you have come to me,
I know exactly how it’s done –I’ll climb your Family Tree!”

These BRANCHES are not confined to the spelling of Featherston. but may also include Featherstone. Featherstun. etc. If you have not yet sent in your BRANCH. please do so as soon as possible. I encourage you to take advantage of this FREE SERVICE.

These BRANCHES will be published in the order in which they are received or at my discretion. Every effort will be made to transcribe material exactly as it is submitted. However, if errors occur in this transcription process, please let me know, so I can make corrections in a future volume. If. while typing your lineage for publication, there is a doubt as to the spelling of your surname, the spelling of Featherston will be used.

These BRANCHES may be added to or corrected in future volumes. Therefore, it is not necessary to wait until you have completed your research before submitting your lineage for publication. Although we all may have best intentions of permanently recording our findings, too often the family historian passe3 away or becomes too ill to continue research work and those years of research are lost forever.

By publishing your BRANCH and research material in FEATHERSTON FINDINGS you not only protect your family information, but help future researchers find their elusive family heritage.

You may submit your lineage in the form found in this section or you may submit the information on Family Group Sheets. It is not so important how you submit your lineage, but that you do submit it. Please cite your sources whenever possible.

If you find you are fortunate enough to connect with an established branch already in print, please let me know. The branches will be merged in a future volume, the earlier branch number will be maintained, and later number be eliminated. Perhaps we may eventually find a common ancestor and become one large family!
